I recently found some information in the 1880 Census of Adams co. Ohio that surprised me. James L.Dalton b. January 15, 1830 in VA.is listed in the census with his family.It listed his wife as Barbary (Barbara Bannister Crum) as being born in Ky. Now here is the interesting part. Of his children: William Henry (whom I descend from), John H., Penola (Nola), James L., and Polly M. had a mother born in VA. But Ella M, Ulysses G. and Laura B. had Barbary as a mother. Any one know whom the mother of the first children was?

I think your website is brilliant. It has enabled me to discover my ancestors - who they were, where they lived, etc. I am continuing my research to establish who my great great great grandfather was. I'm convinced he lived in Stanhope, Co. Durham but I can't be sure. One of my great uncles Jos. Ritson Dalton emigrated to Canada in the early part of the 1900s. I am trying to find a link beyond William Dorton, Sr., who was born in the earlier part of the 18th century and died in the later part. I descend from Michael Dalton immigrant from Belfast Ireland who arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1821 and petitioned Sir James Kempt for a land grant at the "Gut of Canso" in 1821. "Gut of Canso" is an alternate name for the geographic Strait of Canso, which separates the island of Cape Breton from mainland Nova Scotia. It was also used as a census designation in the early 1800's for the communities in Sydney County (now Guysborough and Antigonish counties) which fronted on the "Gut", as well as the communities of Cape Breton fronting on the Gut. Researching husbands line, but have reached a dead end, John Tennell b. Oct 1862 and his wife Mattie Waters b. July 1869 in Texas. The dead end is because the family refused to discuss their heritage only saying "We are related to the Dalton Gang!" However, I cannot find any information on either of these two names anywhere, especially as a relation to any Daltons...They had children together starting in about 1897-8. Which means both started later in life. No record of their marriage, birth, or records of any childrens' births. Could their names be made up? Could they both have been born under different names, and changed them to avoid trouble? Their children were born in Indian Territory, right place, right time, wrong names. Help! What can I do?

I dont know too much about my heritage but my mother is a Dalton- from West Virginia.. Morgantown mainly. It seems that our family has some very vivid traits.. almost everyone looks alike and my uncles look almost identical to some in the Dalton Gang from the 1800's. This is very interesting to me since I am in my early 20's and seeing so many Daltons. I am anxious to learn more about it.

i might only be 16 but i have great interest in my roots and where i am from because my grandad and i was wondering if anyone knew about the origins of Daulton because MY grandfather changed our name from Dalton to Daulton and all i know is he was borin in Ulster and called William before marrying Mary and moving to England because he married a southern irish catholic and he was a protestant. does anyone know anything about the family or can tell me about it? if so e-mail me thanks Jon

This is a great site. I come from the line of Daltons/Daultons that go back to Pittsylvania, Virginia. I believe we came from England(though, was always told Ireland,but no one ever knew the link). Our branch of the Dalton tree hails from Port Fairy, (originally named Belfast, Victoria, Australia) where Patrick Dalton from Kilkenny, Ireland, married Johanna Dalton (!) born in Sydney to James and Mary Dalton, (nee Byrne) both formerly of Kilkenny. With Daltons on both sides, there must be quite a few connections out there in the Dalton Data Bank. I am particularly curious about the Kilkenny Daltons. Patrick's parents were John and Bridget (nee Culliton)and his brother Edmond was married to Mary (nee Hoban). Patrick's son Patrick was my grandfather. Cheers to all the Daltons around the world and to all those who are related - that probably covers everyone by now!
