The Dalton population of Oxfordshire as expressed in the following data was relatively small; some 355 surname entries are listed. However, the presence of Dalton variants may be the highest of any county or shire. Most predominant are the occurrences of Dolton, Dolten, Dowlton, Doleton, Dawlton, Doulton and Dollton. Dalton was in the minority. Within the data, particuarly in the birth data, it is quite noticeable that the spelling of a family name can change several times over the course of years.
